Look Inside The Bottle, Not On Top
Corks are a part of wine tradition that symbolize both experience and romanticism. But screw tops have long been associated with lower-class wines, being viewed as a “cheap” alternative to traditional corks. Its true that screw tops are cheaper than corks but they also hold some advantages and have very little impact on the quality of wine.
Traditional corks come from the bark of oak trees, mainly along the Mediterranean coast. While these trees can replenish its bark, there are some that believe the process is still harmful to the environment. However, these oak tree are legally protected and some believe that by ending the corking practice it would result in the end of these protective regulations.
Screw caps are definitely a more airtight seal for wine but that does not always result in a better wine. Corks allow in a low level of oxygen that can have a positive effect on wine. However, screw top manufactures are adapting by producing lids that also allow a low level of oxygen to creep in.
While screw tops have evolved to match the benefits of traditional corks, traditional cork manufacturers have also had to adapt. Research has shown that traditional corks were receptive to molding in nearly one out of every 10 bottles. But changes have also been made to prevent the molding process.
Many wine regions such as Australia have moved almost exclusively to screw tops while others are remaining with the traditional cork. The fact is that screw tops and traditional corks are nearly identical in their ability to preserve wine. Thus, judging the quality of wine based on its lid is no longer an acceptable practice. Instead, focus more on whats inside the bottle rather than whats on top.
